Serif fonts on the web, you don’t see them that often, but why? When used properly it can really make the typography beautiful.
Most of the time when I try to pull off using serif fonts in my CSS, it comes out looking horrible. There’s just something about it.
The interesting question is, how come serif fonts works so well on some sites but just doesn’t work on others?
I Love Typography is an excellent example of how to make serif look great, which isn’t surprising considering the author just loves his fonts. The use of serif is just brilliant, from the big header to using curly brackets as part of the design.
The brilliant artist Kevin Cornell also made serif fonts work really well on his personal site. Using only serif fonts creates a nice transition going from the header font all the way down to the paragraph font.
I really like Rob’s site, the strict grid, the colors, the great header and of course the serif fonts all work together in harmony. I really liked that instead of using an empty line to show the start of a new paragraph, he uses an indentation which I’ve never seen being used in anything other than print.
AIGA uses a great mixture of both serif fonts and sans-serif, which I feel gives that printed feel to it - which is great considering they are somewhat of an online magazine.
These are just some of my own favorites, but there’s much more out there. I took the time to dig up some more that really used serif fonts well, Enjoy!
