I wrote about serif fonts on the web a few months ago and I’ve been keen to do a follow up, both on how important typography on the web has become and just how beautiful some people can make it.
A problem today is that people just don’t think that much about the actual typography of websites, they just slam together a design and pop in their content without thinking that much about it. Which of course works, but they lose out on so many details that improve both the design and readability of a website.
Let’s start with Devkick:
This is one of the most beautiful designs that I’ve seen in a long time, but it’s not just the colors and layout of the site - a lot of it is because of the typography work that has been done here. A great mixture of both serif fonts and all caps sans-serif headlines makes it gorgeous.
Next up is Coudal
Coudal incorporates some great use of Times New Roman which really makes their headlines pop out from the rest of the site. The work on Coudal is really some of the best that I’ve seen, the typography looks great and makes me feel like a real rookie.
One of my favorite sites, Simplebits has some incredible typography. The first thing you see is a beautiful slogan with the best ampersand that I’ve ever seen.
Simplebits uses a great combination of both serif and sans-serif font which really makes the already great design so much better.
A solid typography work really heightens the quality of an already solid design and there are tons of websites out there to prove it. There’s no need to just buzz through it without focusing on the details.

In my own designs I’ve been trying my hand at using typography to make an impact first and then layering on colors and layouts, to make sure the content is readable. This is a good collection of sites, though. Very interesting to parse through.
I would like to note, though, that you do have a typo in your intro paragraph, where you spelled “lose” as “loose”.
